CHOOSING A SINGLE PHASE UPS 700VA – 3kVA<\/span><\/h2>\n

Line Interactive or Online Double Conversion?<\/h4>\n

For small single phase UPS applications, line interactive UPSs have historically been the standard. However, as servers move off-site, applications go to the cloud, and network connectivity becomes more critical, we’re seeing an increase in online double conversion UPS installations to support networking switches and routers. There are some key differences between these two topologies that users should be aware of when selecting a UPS for networking equipment.<\/p>\n

  1. Internal Bypass and Dropping the load<\/span><\/strong> – perhaps the most important difference between line interactive and online double conversion is the internal bypass found in online double conversion UPSs. The bypass allows the UPS to automatically switch to utility or generator power in the event of a battery or other UPS failure. Line interactive UPSs do not have an internal bypass, which means that when the battery dies or if the UPS experiences a failure, the UPS will drop the load.<\/li>\n
  2. Power Conditioning and Voltage Regulation\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>– Line interactive UPSs use transformers to normalize voltage spikes and sags which may result in a voltage range of 8%-30% for the power going to the IT load. With online double conversion, the voltage range of the power to the load is much smaller – 1%-3% because the UPS conditions the power by converting it from AC to DC and back to “clean” AC before sending power to IT equipment.<\/li>\n
  3. Battery life<\/span><\/strong> – particularly in geographic areas where the utility grid can be unstable or unreliable, line interactive UPSs can drain their batteries faster than online double conversion. When a line interactive UPS detects an unusually high surge or sag that may not be managed by the transformers, it will go to battery power so it can provide clean power to the load. This may result in the UPS going to battery more frequently, which means more battery discharges and subsequent charges and a potentially shortened battery life.<\/li>\n
  4. Price<\/span><\/strong> – because of their more sophisticated topology, online double conversion UPSs are more expensive than line interactive UPSs. Depending on the power rating, online double conversion can be 20% – 30% more expensive. However, given the added reliability of the static bypass, most users find the added peace of mind to be well worth the extra cost.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Customers using single phase UPS equipment in the 700VA – 3kVA range to support critical servers, networking equipment, or storage devices are encouraged to consider upgrading to online double conversion UPSs.
